PROGRAM DURATION
The program has a four-year duration. During that time, students will have to complete 12 courses, take a proficiency test in German, French, or Italian, pass the qualification exam, and successfully defend their doctoral dissertation. After obtaining the credits required by the program, students must enroll in the ADM 3100 – Doctoral Dissertation discipline, to then defend their dissertation.

PUC-Rio’s Doctoral Program in Business Administration is focused on training experts in teaching and research on the administrative phenomenon. For this, it is geared towards training teachers and researchers who can effectively contribute to the advancement of knowledge in Business Administration.
The Program is based on the following pillars:
- A strong methodological basis, taking into consideration the plurality of paradigms and methods used in Business Administration from different fields;
- Emphasis on affiliating students to Nuclei and Research Fields in the Business Administration Department, in order to guide their contributions toward being relevant, both to the Department, and to the Business Administration field;
- Requirement of broad basic training in Business Administration;
MAJORS
The program has four Majors: Strategy, Finance, Marketing, and Organizations.
CURRICULUM
Basic Program:
Is composed of 12 credits, three on the student’s research field, three on quantitative methods, and the remaining six to be chosen to fit the student’s needs, as is written in the program menu. These credits can be obtained in the Master’s Program at IAG PUC-Rio or in another master’s or doctoral program of proven academic excellence. The use of credits will be approved by analyzing the course and the course program.
Methodology Courses:
Central to the program, these courses offer a solid methodological basis, emphasizing the quantitative or qualitative area, depending on the student’s project’s orientation. They make up a total of 15 credits comprising required and elective courses. These can be taken at IAG, in other PUC-Rio departments or even in another university, as long as it is recommended by the student’s advisor and is approved by the program coordinators.
Research Field Courses:
Provides support for obtaining research pertaining to the doctoral dissertation. There are three courses, totaling three credits. There is a Research Seminar, a Qualification Exam, and a Doctoral Dissertation. At this point, the student must already have a thesis advisor and must be affiliated with one of the program’s research fields, while being dedicated to the practice of research.

Provides support for obtaining research pertaining to the doctoral dissertation. There are three courses, totaling three credits. There is a Research Seminar, a Qualification Exam, and a Doctoral Dissertation. At this point, the student must already have a thesis advisor and must be affiliated with one of the program’s research fields, while being dedicated to the practice of research.
RESEARCH FIELDS
Financial Decision Making in Environments with Risk and Uncertainty
It focuses on financial modeling based on the quantification of the impact of uncertainties, focusing on risk analysis from the perspective of the Theory of Real and Derivative Options, and also from the perspective of the Energy Economy and Finance area, with an emphasis on decision making in Infrastructure projects. The Financial Econometrics, Valuation, and Corporate Governance projects complete the basis for the development and improvement of models, together with the Behavioral Finance Theory that incorporates the irrationality of financial agents into the models.
The Impact of Change in Marketing Strategies
Research and projects in this field are related to consumer behavior, consumer relations, service marketing, international marketing, online marketing, communication and semiotics, among others.
Planning, Strategy, and Performance
Includes (a) studies and projects involving corporate strategy, competitive and collaborative strategies, modeling and measurement of organizational performance, strategic planning and strategic governance, among others; and (b) research on Brazilian multinational companies, internationalization strategies, internationalization of business clusters, performance of internationalized companies, bornglobals and international entrepreneurship, made in effects, among others.
Organizational Studies and Labor Relations in Changing Environments
This field covers research on organizations: theories, management models, structures and processes; organizational behavior: values, identity, culture, power, commitment, leadership, negotiation, change, learning and knowledge management; the meaning of work and labor relations; people management, skills, employability and careers; and organizational studies: critical perspectives on organizations; communication and organizational discourse; history, memory and organizations.
